CASE STUDY
GATEWAY HR

Gateway HR’s ‘Walk the World’ fundraiser

The Lewis Foundation’s 12-month spell as Gateway HR’s Charity of the Year resulted in thousands of pounds being raised and a trip around the globe!

We were delighted to be the outsourced Human Resources services and training company’s chosen charity during 2021, with the team of HR consultants and coaches supporting us through an ambitious ‘Walk the World’ fundraiser which spanned the entire period.

Theresa Wright Chief Operating Officer at Gateway HR said: “The Lewis Foundation's founder Lorraine Lewis contacted us as they were thinking of employing their first member of staff and wanted to ensure they had everything in place. After chatting to Lorraine, we offered her the 'charity' place on our upcoming Coaching and Mentoring course.

“We were blown away by her humble, selfless nature, and we knew immediately that we wanted The Lewis Foundation to be our next Charity of the Year, especially as we all been affected by cancer so the work they do to support adult cancer patients had great meaning to us all.

“It was the year of the Olympics, so we wanted to come up with a fundraising challenge of Olympic-style proportions. It’s a massive 50 million steps to walk around the world – definitely a big enough challenge for our team of nine people, plus our office dog.”

Theresa enlisted the help of colleague Graham Ravenscroft to help with the planning and bring everyone on board.

“We were all fully engaged over the year to complete the steps, and even plotted milestones and themed days along the way depending on what country we were in,” said Graham.

“We worked out we needed to walk an average of 500 miles, amounting to 1,000,000 steps a week, for 52 weeks.

“We created fun videos and shoutouts to create a momentum on social media and reached out to our professional and personal networks to sponsor us. We usually run 8-week challenges for our chosen Charity of the Year, so this really was a challenge on an epic scale, and it needed lots of planning behind the scenes to pull it off. That made the whole things even more exciting from a staff morale point of view. It brought us together for a collective cause.”

Gateway HR had smashed the fundraising target by Christmas and had raised a total of £2,221 by January 2021 – enough money for over 600 gift packs. Their virtual ‘stop-offs’ included Germany, Czech Republic, Tokyo and many other countries. They even rolled out the red carpet and got dressed up when they ‘arrived’ in Los Angeles.

“Lorraine and Lee Lewis joined us for our final lap of Pitsford Reservoir, and it was a great ending to a fantastic challenge.

“As a company based in Corby, it is important to us that we support local charities. We would always urge other Northamptonshire businesses to do the same.

It is so worthwhile to give back to organisations like The Lewis Foundation, and we are delighted to have raised enough money to provide more gift packs to adult cancer patients.”

The Lewis Foundation is currently looking for more business and corporate partners to sponsor and support their work.
