I had the pleasure of meeting Leonie Cox, behind Best Friends Northampton at Whittlebury Hall earlier in the year.
At the time I was attending a Jennifer Young Training Day. Leonie approached me because she noticed my Lewis Foundation T- Shirt and wanted to know more about what we did. I remember Leonie wanting to start a charity to help others too and shared the reason why with me.
Leonie hadn't found what she was looking for when she had cancer. Leonie was looking for a face to face support group to help alleviate her fears and anxieties but there was not anything like this in Northampton.
Leonie was passionate about what she wanted to achieve and I was so happy to hear that she had set up her charity Breast Friends a local peer support group for people affected by Breast cancer in Northampton.
How Breast Friends began.
Leonie met 2 other ladies along the way who also lived in Northampton, who she met through sheer circumstances. All diagnosed within 6 months of each other of breast cancer, but they formed a strong bond. It was friendship, support, advice, comfort, kindness, laughter, inspiration and much more. They wanted others to experience this too.
It was one day during a catch up in a coffee shop, they talked of all the great things they had found to help them and what was missing in our community...this was where the BREAST FRIENDS NORTHAMPTON brainchild was born. Six months later and with the support of MacMillan, local healthcare teams and many more they were finally ready.
