About the Event

The National Lift Tower based in Northampton is an iconic feat of architecture. At a staggering 418 feet, it is now the largest abseil tower in the world.

We are asking YOU to take on this amazing challenge and abseil down the tower to raise money for The Lewis Foundation.

The money you raise from the challenge will help to fund the free gifts and support you give to adults as they go through cancer treatment in hospital and the community. Taking on this challenge means you will make a HUGE difference to adults as they go through cancer treatment.

We would love you to join us!

Abseil for FREE by raising a minimum of £200 (excluding gift aid) for The Lewis Foundation.

Below are some frequently asked questions about what to expect.

Will we get photos?

Photos are £15 for a pair (printed and emailed) taken from the top as you go over.

You can also buy The Lewis Foundation t-shirts with the money also going to our charity for £12. Both items are completely optional.

What is the minimum age?

The minumum age is 12.  You will need signed parental consent if you are younger than 18. There is no maximum age and the current record is 89 years old.

Is there a weight limit?

Yes – there is an upper limit of 136kg (21st 5lb). There is no minimum weight.

Where is the National Abseil Centre?

At the National Lift Tower in Northampton. Directions can be found here.

What happens in the event of bad weather?

This is a weather dependant activity and a decision will be made on the day as to whether it is safe to abseil the outside. If it is felt this is too dangerous we have the right to move the activity inside. Please note if this alternative offer is not accepted, this will mean you lose your abseil place.

How fit do I need to be to abseil?

This is an extreme abseil and is physically demanding. However those seeking assisted abseils or anyone with specific access needs please contact us, so we can get in touch with the National Abseil Centre for more information - lynette.lee@thelewisfoundation.co.uk

Do I need to have abseiled before?

No – you will be given full instructions on the day.

What are the risks?

On the outside of the building, there is a small risk that if the wind picks up while you are abseiling you could be blown away from the building and hit it on the way back in, possibly resulting in bruising and other injuries.

How long does it take?

Barring delays, which are sometimes inevitable for example adverse weather conditions. You can expect to be here for about an hour in total. The abseil itself takes anywhere between 8 and 20 minutes depending on the individual.

What clothing do I wear?

We advise if wearing a t-shirt to wear long sleeve underneath and trousers/leggings.

Additional Information regarding abseils & Covid-19
